John Toki has maintained a studio in Richmond, California since 1974. His public commissions include a mural for Oakland City Hall and monumental outdoor sculptures installed across California, among them Blue Back, a twenty-foot ceramic sculpture at the Oakland Museum of California, and Spring Majesty, a twenty-four-foot sculpture at the California Shakespeare Theatre in Orinda. His work has been exhibited at the Contemporary Art Center Cincinnati, the Oceanside Museum, the Carnegie Museum and the American Museum of Ceramic Art, Pomona.
An educator for over twenty-five years, Toki retired from the California College of the Arts in 2007. Throughout his career he has lectured and led workshops internationally, at UC Berkeley, the San Francisco Art Institute, the DeYoung Museum and institutions in Canada, Holland, Taiwan and Turkey. He has served residencies at Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts and the European Ceramic Work Center in Holland, and has juried over thirty-five exhibitions nationwide.
In 2010 he was named Contra Costa College Distinguished Alumnus of the Year, and in 2013 received the NCECA Outstanding Achievement Award and was honored by the City of Berkeley with John Toki Day. A textbook author for over twenty-five years, he has co-authored three seminal ceramics books including Hands In Clay and Make It In Clay, and currently serves as Associate Director of Mission Clay Art and Industry Program, Corona, California.
